:  an enzyme that promotes transfer of an amino group from glutamic acid to oxaloacetic acid and that when present in abnormally high levels in the blood is a diagnostic indication of heart attack or liver disease—called also aspartate transaminase, glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase
